Charm City Cakes: Dream It, They’ll Make It

5 tiers, fondant, gum-paste flowers sounds like an elegant and traditional cake perfect for any wedding, except yours. One of the most sought-after custom cake shops in the country, Charm City Cakes located in Baltimore, Maryland is the home to Duff Goldman and his team of eclectic cake artists. Sure, they make beautiful and traditional wedding cakes, but they also make some of the most amazing geek and gamer inspired cakes like their lifesize Star Wars R2D2.

“We have fun with every cake we make, but we always have a LOT of fun when we get to work with video game and online gaming companies. They are staffed by folks who are just as slightly off kilter and imaginative as we are, and so the projects we put together for video game launches and events always tend to be MEGA. Here’s a round up of some of our favorite collaborations with the gaming world!”

Duff is the executive chef of the Baltimore-based Charm City Cakes shop, featured for 10 seasons on Food Network’s  Ace of Cakes. The show highlighted the frantic production of a substantial number of custom cakes in a short period of time. Known for using non-traditional cooking utensils such as blow torches, belt sanders and power saws to construct his cake creations, Ace of Cakes catapulted Duff to chef-lebrity status.

“Here at Charm City Cakes, we are motivated by constantly trying to outdo ourselves by making cakes that are beautiful, challenging, and as out-of-the-ordinary as possible! Our inspiration comes from everywhere: art, fabric, furniture, architecture, landscapes, science, music, anything! Most of all, our inspiration comes from you! Each cake is individually designed to match you, your personality, and the theme of the occasion you are celebrating.”

This Ghostbusters themed wedding cake is replica of the final scene of the movie, when the guys are battling the Stay Puff Marshmallow man from atop an NYC skyscraper (with the bride and groom doing the proton pack zapping).

Their cakes are completely custom made, and priced individually by the complexity of their design.  Tiered cakes start at $7 a serving. There is a 50 serving minimum on wedding and tiered cakes. 3D, sculptural cakes start at $1000.
