Maegan + Michael’s Geeky Santa Monica Wedding

From comic book inspired centerpieces to an out of this world Star Wars themed wedding cake Maegan and Michael’s oceanfront wedding was the perfect combination of traditional elegance and geeky inspiration. “The most important thing for us was that the wedding reflected “us” which means including everything from comic books to Star Wars,” explains Maegan. “We wanted an outdoor wedding near a beach that incorporated the people and things that we love. We wanted to have fun and wanted our guests to have fun.”

Destined to be together, Maegan was 13 and Michael was 16 the first time they met at a bowling tournament their parents were participants in. A few years later, the couple had their second “first meeting” when Michael was a senior in high school and Maegan was a freshman. Michael was one of the senior tour guides for the incoming freshman and Maegan just happened to be in his group that day. After sending long messages to each other over Facebook the two finally arranged to met up, six years later, Michael proposed to Maegan in Hawaii. Completely surprised by the proposal, and in fact, laughed when he got down on one knee because she thought he was joking. Then she saw the ring and knew he was serious and, of course, said yes.

Planning their California wedding from Colorado, almost 3 states away, required some serious organizational skills and knowledge of the area. They were instantly smitten with wedding planner Kristeen LaBrot having stated she liked comic books on her website was the perfect match for a comic book inspired wedding in need of some planning. ”While on their consultation phone call, they mentioned their love of comics and all things geeky and I couldn’t have been more thrilled,” says Kristeen. “We’ve all seen pop culture / comics / geeky weddings but this was the first one that I’ve seen that was equally elegant.”

With over 17 years of experience, Kristeen helped the couple find amazing vendors and kept everything organized and running smoothly. When the couple wanted action figures in their wedding Kristeen came up with the perfect solution “those figures are actually lightweight PVC banks,” says Kristeen. ”There was no stress the day of–we were able to have a great day with each other and our friends and family. Everything that we envisioned happened and it really was a perfect day,” says Maegan.

“We cut out a taped together the cassette tape name cards, the candy boxes on the tables, we put the welcome bags together, we designed the save the date and the invitations. Kristeen designed the menus, programs, the signs for the bar,  table numbers, and the thumbprint tree guest book, and other items.”

“We wanted the wedding to reflect our personalities and things that we liked, so we incorporated unique details wherever we could. Michael’s cufflinks were the pig bride and groom from an episode of The Simpsons. All of the songs we used in the ceremony were remakes of songs used in John Hughes movies. Comic book characters were in the centerpieces. The invitations included a speech bubble tear out that we asked guests to write or draw something in that reminded them of us. We dispalyed the speech bubbles on a magnet board at the reception.”

Photography Amanda McKinnon beautifully captured the couple’s wedding day memories, and for both of them, the most memorable one was the first look. “We had the first look before the ceremony, and we were both really nervous, but once we saw each other it all melted away.” Later, the couple danced together for the first time as Husband and Wife to “Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper featuring Sarah McLachlan. The most important thing about being in love, says Maegan, “be original. Only you know how to love each other best, don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise.”
