Kristin + Shawn’s Vintage Video Game Wedding

Happy Valentine’s Day! I know you haven’t been feeling the love lately with my lack of posts being sick and all, but today I’m back with a sweet vintage shoot from Lovely Valentine Photography!

From the photographer, Lovely Valentine Photography:

“This was a perfect day to remember. Kristin and Shawn met at college where Kristin remembers Shawn as the guy who was really good at guitar hero. Eventually they connected and became each other’s “player 2′s”. Shawn surprised Kristin when he proposed during cherry blossom week in Japan and the rest is history! They tied the knot at the top of the hill in Larz Anderson Park surrounded by their loved ones. They then took a ride in a vintage Packard to the Waterworks museum. Kristin was looking like a Hollywood starlet with her pin curls and stunning dress.”

From the Bride:

“My (now) husband and I are both artists (in the video game industry) and we had a lot of ideas of how we wanted our wedding and reception to look and feel. We agreed that the wedding itself would be simple and sweet and that the reception would be fun and full of good food! As foodies it was very important that we didn’t serve the usual “wedding food” and we were leaning towards a cocktail style reception. We wanted something a little laid back (but still nice) that really showed off our artsy side (with the occasional subtle geeky touch). It was important to us that we have the reception somewhere a little offbeat, as we aren’t the fancy hotel ballroom types. I initially imagined a rustic barn setting (after surfing Pinterest) but realized it didn’t really feel quite right for us. When we saw photos of the Metropolitan Waterworks Museum, we knew immediately that it was the perfect place for our party.”

“Our colors were white and gray with pops of jewel tones. Our reception venue was such an amazing space even without decorations that we didn’t want to fight with the awesome vintage vibe. We had a subtle (or not so subtle) theme in our printed items of us as classic game characters as an homage to old school video games and to symbolize our new adventure we’d be embarking on. I (and the occasional willing helper) DIYed most of the wedding decorations. All of the bouquets, boutonnieres, and centerpieces consisted of paper flowers that were carefully crafted and arranged by hand. My husband and I also designed and illustrated the save the dates, invitations, wedding programs and favors. My veil was hand made by my husband’s mother as well.”

“One of my favorite moments was when we discovered that a Ferrari enthusiasts group was having a lunch at the hotel. Two of my bridesmaids ran downstairs in their bathrobes to ask if we could take photos with the cars and the guys agreed (and even waited around a little for us to finish getting ready). I think those photos came out amazing and definitely got me pumped up for the ceremony! I think my favorite carefully planned detail was probably our antique limo. I had told my husband that I was booking a limo but he had no idea that it was going to be a 1930′s Cadillac! I felt like it really added to the vintage flair of our wedding and the ride to the reception gave us a little moment to ourselves. It was also just cool to get to ride around in such a classic car.”

“For our favors I took the illustration from our invitations and got it printed onto small change purses. Inside we put a neat little flashlight and some chocolate. As for our cake we chose to get cupcakes! We really like Sweet Cupcakes and we knew that they don’t use any nuts in their bakery (since food allergies were a concern.) Also, getting to choose many different flavors and having to-go boxes for people made it a lot more fun than normal cake! Our cake toppers were figurines of Ness and Paula from the video game Earthbound, one of our favorites.”

Any advice for future brides?

“Keep on top of your DIY details! I had been doing a good job getting things done but when we had a last minute wedding disaster it made getting up the energy to work on DIY stuff a lot harder. Don’t be afraid to ask people for help when you need it and leave yourself plenty of time to get things done in case something goes wrong.”
